Three Quick Tricks with Nature’s Delicious Nectar- Honey

Winnie the Pooh was on to something with his infatuation with this sweet substance.

For your face… Use honey as a facial mask.  Honey has the natural power to tone skin, clear acne, and cleanse away blackheads.  It’s full of antioxidants, it helps cleanse harmful bacteria, and it strengthens skin.  After the first try, a honey mask will leave your face noticeably softer and smoother.  To use, wash face, making sure that it is completely free of all make-up, lotions, etc.  Then, apply pure honey to your face in a thin layer and leave on for about 30 minutes.  Also, consider adding an egg (for very dry skin), grated apple (to correct enlarged pores), or avocado and banana (for added moisture and enlarged pores).

For your hair… Treat your hair with honey and olive oil.  Honey is packed with vitamins and has the power to seal in moisture.  Before shampooing your hair, add a mixture of honey and extra virgin olive oil to your hair.  If the mixture is to sticky to work with add a little more olive oil or some water.  Equally distribute mixture throughout hair and then cover with a shower cap for thirty minutes.  Rinse out and then shampoo and condition as usual.  Hair will be noticeably softer and shinier.  This works great with natural hair, especially if you are having trouble with keeping in the moisture.

For your tummy… Honey’s vitamins, antioxidants, and protein (not so surprisingly)  makes it good for consumption, as well.  Honey can be used for a replacement for white sugar in summer drinks like iced tea and lemonade.  It is also a delicious addition to many meals.  Try these easy recipes:

Sticky chicken- Combine 2 tbs honey, 1 tbs olive oil, 1 tsp ground cumin, 1 tsp ground coriander and 1 tsp ground cardamom in a bowl. Season with salt and pepper. Place 8 chicken thigh fillets on a non-stick baking tray and brush with the honey mixture. Cover with plastic wrap and place in the fridge for 30 minutes to marinate. Preheat grill on high. Remove plastic wrap. Cook chicken under grill, basting occasionally with marinade, for 4 minutes each side or until golden and cooked through.

 Sweet roast vegetables–  Preheat oven to 200°C. Place 2 small parsnips, peeled, quartered, 1 large zucchini, thickly sliced, 4 baby coliban (chat) potatoes, halved, and 300g large orange sweet potato (kumara), peeled, thickly sliced, in a roasting pan. Combine 100ml fresh orange juice, 1 tbs olive oil, 1 tbs honey and 1 garlic clove, crushed, in a bowl. Pour over the parsnip mixture and toss to coat. Top with 3 fresh thyme sprigs. Season with salt and pepper. Roast in oven for 35 minutes. Serve.
